Stirrings => Feelings; Feelings => Heartache

Ever think about something so much that you put yourself in a bad mood? Not so much a bad mood as in “angry”, but a bad mood as in “sour” or “sad”. I find that happening all too much to me lately. I think about what I am missing, what I have missed and still what I will miss because I am away at this adventure in life called the Disney College Program, and I end up putting myself in a “sour rut”. It doesn't really have an effect on my work, or relationship with my friends, but it does seem to effect how I view the rest of my time here.

It has been 3 months as of yesterday and I have 5 more months to go. I have seen the Magic Kingdom transform overnight from summer celebrations to the soothing colors of autumn and just a touch of Halloween has shown up as well.
Should things go well for me, I should also be blessed to see the turnaround from Halloween to Christmas within the one day the celebrations change. I am just as excited as ever to see the holidays here at Disney, if not more excited than ever before! The more I look forward to the holidays and the celebrations that take place, the more I am reminded of the celebrations I will be missing back at home. I won't see the costume party at Olivet, I will not be home for Christmas, not even New Years! Thanksgiving is a whole different type of matter. I have no clue what I will be doing for any part of November! The opportunity to play in the parks whenever I so feel like it (so long as I do not have to work) and being around so much culture and cuisines pale in comparison to the fun, excitement, love, compassion, and warmth that I get from my professors, associates and friends back at Olivet Nazarene University. One massive understatement as follows: I miss them.

The thoughts in my mind can change, but what is in my heart is set; I miss my professors, friends, family, dorm room, campus, weather, the quietness of Olivet, the loudness of Chicago, the late nights doing nothing, the early mornings frantically studying, the afternoon naps, Allen and Wrench (my two guitars), spontaneity with friends, and chapel. Yes, I miss chapel! Granted, I never had a problem with going to chapel in the first place, but now that I realize it's happening without me, I miss it even more!

With all this sad, sob-ish stuff filling my brain and oozing from my heart, I have to find some way of cheering myself up and so here it is. In the 3 months that I have been here, I have come to realize a few things about myself that I do not think I would have noticed unless I came here specifically. They are as follows:

  1. I am ACTUALLY a Leader.
  2. I have immensely strong emotions that are not easily faltered.
  3. I am capable of refocusing myself in times of confusion.
  4. I know how to “let go” of things that weigh me down.
  5. I now know more about the things that try to weigh me down.

I am sure that a lot of my friends and family would probably say a lot of these things about me as is, but now that I am here (AWAY) from my friends and family, I have noticed things about myself that have been reflected from other people. The comments they say to me, the compliments I receive and the criticism have all been proof of what I have listed, and now I see it in myself.

Now that my longing feelings have been expelled and my wisdom now expounded upon, I will leave with the message that I am super blessed to even be accepted into this program and I will do my best to see it through with all my heart and soul. God placed me here and once again, I will follow His lead. After all, my heart can only grow fonder of the things I miss the most. Yet the things I miss the most are already fond of me!

Excitement, Exhaustion and Hypersomnia

Wake up at 7. Leave by 8. Work begins at 9:45.
Work for 9 hours. Leave by 7. Arrive home by 8.
Wash up. Eat up. Sleep. Repeat.
Cozy new slippers I bought. Mickey Mouse shoes!

Such is my life for the past month or so and it shall continue this way for a while. I have experienced many ups and downs since coming to this new world of magic, torment, trials and happiness. I love being a part of the magic, but hate the torment it brings me. I love the happiness I feel, but hate the trials I am put through to test my ability, knowledge and commitment. I am used to being away from my family because I am a college student. I am not used to the hours my body must work despite my mind telling me otherwise. That being said, let's wake up at 7...

The mornings bring a new day and new adventure. I am always excited to take on the day's work and bring magic to new people. Whether it be via the Disney difference or through everyday interactions with my roommates and friends. Magic happens all around us though I do not think we are prone to notice it. Perhaps it is because I am a Christian that I try to see the good, better, and best in everything I do and in every person I meet.

This little card made my day!
Sometimes it's not so hard to see, for example: Disney Pin Trading has become a big deal for quite a few of our guests. Seeing how about 60% of our guests are return visitors, I can understand that trading the pins bought from one's last visit with cast members allows them to keep the memories alive in a more tangible, souvenir-ish way. I trade with more adults than I do with children! Not too long ago, I traded some pins with a small child, probably no more than 10 years of age. He presented me with a “thank you” card for trading with him, which was probably made by his parents. It had a website on it which lead to more praises and thanks to all the cast members who help bring the memories to life each and every time they look at their Disney Pins. I never thought of the pin trading in such high regard, but that family must have been trading for quite a while if they loved it that much. That little thank you card made me realize just how much people love the little things that Disney cast members do for them. It also got me thinking about how much we take the little things for granted. I know that sounds very cliché, but I believe its true now more than ever. That simple text from a parent wanting to know how your day is going; the random compliment from a fellow co-worker; the little thank you card from a child; all of these things can, and usually are, easily overlooked in the grime of the day.

Sadly, there are more times in which the little happy things God sends us are overlooked and downplayed, for example: One day I was out with Goofy and we had a family in line waiting their turn. The parents were excited, the kids (one about 13-14, the other about 5-6) were excited and everyone was getting along. I never know anything about the guests who are here, only that they want to have a fun, magical time. Being that I am here for the experience, I want to give it to them. As much fun as the family seemed to be having, once it was there turn, the 5-6 year old starts to scream and cry. Goofy is REALLY tall and can be a bit intimidating to some children, understandably. It seemed that almost instantly, the parents were code red MAD. They were yelling, the child was crying, Goofy is hiding in the corner, it was pure chaos in a 10 square foot area! Thankfully, the other child seemed to have some since of how to get his sibling to not be afraid, or at least stop crying. He scooped up the little one and went to the exit, where I heard him say “Just look at Goofy from here. I think he's more afraid of you than you are of him!” and he was pointing to where Goofy was crouched in his corner looking at them. They didn't get a family picture, but at least the child didn't seem scared anymore. All I could think about was how quickly the parents were to yell instead of console. My guess would be that this wasn't the first time that took place. Perhaps they had seen another character earlier in the day and the same reaction took place: Excitement turned to Terrified. Perhaps this same event took place with everyone they had seen and the parents were simply fed up with it. I do not know. I saw the kindness and love in the older brother and that made the moment. Maybe the parents were tired and exhausted, maybe they were just not as patient because they have an older child. All in all, I'd rather look at the good in the situation rather than simply brand the parents as “bad parents”. I know not of their situation but I do know the outcome of that little event. A well of sympathy and compassion always overcomes me when smaller children are afraid of something, let alone something so friendly as Goofy.

I want to play this so bad! I need a 3DS!
Other than being a part of the magic that everyone sees as a guest in Walt Disney World, seeing the massive amount of families everyday does pluck at some tender heart strings. I miss my family. Yes, I am a college student and yes I am used to being away for long times. However, I missed my mother's birthday, I missed my parents anniversary, I am going to miss Thanksgiving with them, I am going to miss my birthday with them, I am going to miss Christmas with them and I am going to miss New Years with them. Not to mention the smaller celebrations that I cannot spend with them that I would be able to spend with them if I were normally at home. My brother and I are such gamer geeks that when a new game comes out that we really like or waited a long time for, its like a small celebration for us. Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance] came out and I'm not at home to talk about it with my brother. Phone conversations with that boy are just NOT the same! Epic Mickey 2 is going to come out soon and as awesome as it is that I am at Disney World when it does come out, it won't be the same as being at home with my geeky gamer brother. Whenever new awesome movies come out, I cannot see them with my family. I either go alone or with the new friends I have made while being here (or with good ole' Andy). I haven't seen any summer blockbusters with my family this year at all. A few days ago, I was thinking about why I keep buying so many gifts to send home and I realize it's because I miss them all so much. I want my family to know that I am always thinking of them so I want to send them lots of stuff. Not to mention when we were here on vacation when I was young, we saved money by NOT buying stuff. I feel like my family deserves some good quality Disney merchandise since we more or less deprived ourselves of it when we were here. Every time I see a family that reminds me of my own, I think to myself, “THAT was us when we were here...”

Aside from the daily magical tribulations that plague the role I am playing, I can openly say that I love the Disney College Program. God has blessed me with this opportunity and I want to make the best of it. I have fought illness, exhaustion, anger, sadness, enemies and friends, yet I am still here and still operating to the best of my abilities. I pray everyday that I will follow the path set before me and have the wisdom to know what that path might look like. Even if I don't I always hope I have the faith to follow the light even when the ground is not seen. (Much like the Rockin Roller Coaster in Hollywood Studios!) This blog is my roster of experiences and I hope all who care to read about it will read it and be thorough. I'm sure I'll be asking something along these lines once I am finished (I can't help but end with a quote from a much loved Disney character):

“Did everyone see that because I will NOT be doing that again.”

The Itsy Bitsy Spider

The Itsy Bitsy Spider went up the water spout.
Down came the rain and washed the spider out.
Then out came the sun and dried up all the rain,
and the Itsy Bitsy Spider went up the spout again.

This is my life right now. The weather is quite predictable in its own unpredictable way. The mornings start out just about the same; sun shining, the air is cool and the ground is dry. Then somewhere between 2pm-4pm, the weather changes to anything between a light drizzle to a full onslaught of a super cell. Then somewhere between 15 minutes to an hour and a half, the light drizzle/super cell will stop and the sun will return to dry up all the rain. And the Itsy Bitsy Spider went up the spout again.

Soon I will start my training as a character attendant in Magic Kingdom! I will have to be trained at all the parks to be sure I can properly keep Disney's icons safe and sound. No one wants to meet Minnie if shes sad and crying! (Well, maybe if they want to give her a hug and make her feel better). I am super excited for my role and I know I can perform well onstage.

Aside from training for the experience of the internship, I have also started my two classes now. Yesterday and every Monday for the next 9 weeks I will have Experiential Learning and today and every Tuesday for the next 9 weeks I will have Human Resource Management. Both of my professors are very sweet and absolutely love their jobs. You can see it in their eyes! There are some crazy fun assignments that I have to do, which I may elaborate on later as they unfold. I think I am going to thoroughly enjoy both of these classes and hopefully the other two classes I will be taking next term for the fall.

With all the official stuff out of the way, I can happily say that my buddy and I are settling in quite well. We have gotten into the routine of which buses to take to get to the stores, which buses to take to get to the various parts of each of the parks and for the most part, we get along with our respective roommates and the others' as well! As for me personally, there were a few hiccups amongst my roomies and the apartment. We need to set a cleaning schedule and need a few things for the bathroom that we share. On the micro-level, me and my roommate (there are 2 per room in this 3 room apartment) get along quite well. She likes to spend her time gaming just like me, so we are both practically on our computers in our leisure. I have also found time to read some more, which I cherish at the beginning of my training. I am sure that once I get to working and classes start to pick up, I won't have nearly as much free time as I do now.

Now that I am getting acclimated to the routine of work, classes, shopping on the bus, the Disney Look, the many Disney Guidelines and life with 5 other people, I can honestly say that I can blatantly see that there are some people here who I am meant to help. There are also people here who are meant to help me. There is so much learning I want to do as well as teaching that I want to show. As big as Disney is for me right now, I don't want to lose sight of how much bigger Christ is in my life, wherever I am. Whenever I get the chance, I still wear my oversized cross and everyday I wear my scripture ring. Despite the information overload I am experiencing, I want to somehow remember to keep Christ in the middle of it all, not pushed off to the side. That being said, my eyes have been opened to many volunteer opportunities linked with being in the Disney College Program, which all sound super amazing and fun. Though these programs and trips are the obvious ways to serve Christ and help people all the time, I get this pinching feeling in my heart that there is something much bigger that I am supposed to help with. Perhaps not something as big as say changing something within the company, but something a bit closer to home-base. Just about everyday, I see people who live and fill their lives with something harmful (alcohol, gossiping, health carelessness, etc.) and wonder why they still feel empty. They know there is something missing, but instead of taking a step back to see what it is, they continue to fill up with these attributes they don't need. I may not know what their lives were like before they came here, but I can spot an empty person when I see one (usually). That being said, I don't mean to imply that I haven't met anyone who doesn't have Christ in their life or at least have some form of focus/care for their health and future. It just so happens that many of the people that I see here are rather reckless and carefree in a negative way. Drinking and smoking and drinking and smoking until you pass out is not the healthiest way to spend one's day off. I think anyone can agree to that on some level.

One reason why I can believe that I am here for a reason is because, if one does a little research, you will find out that Vista Way Apartment complexes, where I currently live, is considered one of the “best places to get laid, next only to the Playboy Mansion” according to quite a few articles and websites. This place has also gained a nickname, being called Vista “Lay” instead of Vista Way. To me, that's scary. Here I am, smack-dab in the middle of this place! Although, personally, I don't think God could have put me in a better place to shine His light. He loves His children but let's face it, we are reckless and don't think too far ahead into the future at this age. A large group of twenty-somethings, extra spending money and very few classes to attend is a mixture for impulsive, instant self-gratifying behavior which can have dire consequences in the long run and even in the moment. I could have chosen to be in a Wellness apartment (Chattam Square or Patterson Court) with the folks who are under 21, but at that age there is a whole different type of drama (*cough* HIGH SCHOOL *cough) that I'm not sure I could deal with on a semi-daily basis. Then again, we pick and choose our battles, to some extent...

Though I have time to spend here, I don't want to waste time helping people. For now, I will bide my time and wait for the right moments. A good message delivered at the wrong moment will not be received well. God is shaping my heart and my words to those I need to speak and I know He will always guide me. I will follow the guidelines set forth for me and with a smile on my face and Christ in my heart, I want everyone to have a magical day!

Disney Official and Making a Wish

Traveling, airplane, take-off and landing. Arrival.
Instead of peanuts, we got vanilla wafers!
Okay. I have been here for four days now and the sheer amount of information that has been bestowed upon my brain has been super-massive. I can happily say that I think I am going to thoroughly enjoy myself here. My buddy and I have been settled in and I now live directly above him! Awesome! My roomies are amazing and the apartment is decent-sized and comfortably fits all of us.

I have a few days off before I start my position training and I am taking this time to reflect upon what has happened over the passed few days...

Yesterday, my friend and a groups of new friends we met went to hang out at Magic Kingdom at 8 at night. It was quite spontaneous and very fun! I haven't been there since I was a child and all the memories of my childhood experience of Magic Kingdom came flooding back to me. I felt like an 8 year old all over again.
Cinderella's Castle!

The train station

Also yesterday, we had to go through our Disney Traditions training, in which we learned about the general overview of being a Disney Employee. Even though we are just interns, the amount of influence we have over the experience of the Disney guests is incomparable. For the most part, we are the faces of Disney. No one will meet anyone else in the Disney parks other than us interns and we have to be ready to make the magic happen! Once we received our Disney IDs, got through the entire history of Disney, took a tour through Magic Kingdom to look for some of the things we were just talking about, and returned to Disney University, Mickey Mouse came in to deliver our official Walt Disney World Name tags! That was probably the highlight of yesterday, having my official name tag delivered by the “boss” himself!
I am Disney Official!

Over the next few days, I'll continue to settle in, make new friends and familiarize myself with the areas of Disney and hopefully I'll be more than ready to start my training this coming Sunday. Monday I start Experiential Learning and Tuesday I start Human Resource Management. I also hold out the hope that I won't have to work right after my classes, but if I do I'll make the best of it!

As far as facts of my travels, that was pretty much it!

The End of Preparation

As it stands, one week from today will be the start of the journey of a lifetime. I will be meeting with my traveling buddy at my home and we will depart by 5:30 in the morning. Needless to say, I am stoked and scared out of my mind. I have finished with the preliminary packing (being physically and mentally ready) and need to move on to the more literal things; packing my clothing and other necessities needed for a 7-month long excursion.

Though I will be staying in one place and won’t actually be traveling anywhere else, there is still inkling in my heart that this is not a “stationary” journey. As much as this is a journey from Point A to Point B and eventually back to Point A, there are many other little journeys that will happen. These journeys aren’t so much measured in distance or location, but measured in maturity and education. There must be a reason I have been chosen for this journey, let alone to go with a close friend of mine. The two of us together must have something we need to learn or perhaps something we need to teach to others…
No matter where I go, I always try to remember to be the missionary for God. He has sent me somewhere for a reason and if the reason is unknown to me, I will simply treat the venture as a way to reach out to the people I meet. While I am in Florida, I am hoping to find a little church I can attend, just as a method of keeping my faith charged and perhaps to have a cushion to fall back on should things get tough. When I am away at college, there are chapel services, a prayer chapel available for use anytime, and our own college church that help keep me encompassed in the word of God and keeps Him in the forefront of my mind and heart. I am sure one of the reasons I fall back into bad habits when I return home every summer is because I don’t have those same amenities to buttress my faith. Ultimately, it is up to me as a person to consecrate my heart to the Lord and keep it that way. Once I leave for this journey, I don’t want it to be riddled with those same bad habits. I want to put my best foot forward as a human being and as a Christian. I want to openly make it known that I am a Christian and not hide behind a bible in attempt to prove it. The Bible is my sword, but I must be willing to wield it properly. Simply showing it is not enough to win people to Christ (which, sadly, I think is all people are willing to try before they give up). I have fought my fair share of battles, however most (if not all) of them were against people who already claimed to be Christian, but simply faltered in their faith. With this new journey ahead of me, I am certain that I will be fighting battles against people who are not Christian, and possibly even despise Christianity for whatever reason. Any of my friends and family knows that I am rather stubborn in my decisions and pride myself on being able to make decisions when others can’t. I can only hope that this resilient stubbornness will help me in my semi-missionary-internship journey.

Aside from the things weighing on my heart, I also have some more pleasant things to think about. For instance, I will be able to see Rush for the 3rd time while I am in Florida! Not only are they probably my all time favorite living band, but I get to see them in Tampa on November 3rd. I’m hoping my traveling buddy will want to see them with me, but I don’t mind flying solo for the event. In other pleasantness, there are many a restaurant I want to go to and many foods I would love to indulge in. Not only will I be able to quell the seafood craving I have had for the last 4 months, I will be able to try many new foods as well. The best way to experience a new place is through the cuisine!

All in all, I am excited to start actually packing for this venture and realizing the potential of what God has in store for me. I will be starting a new, spontaneous chapter in my life and I know that only God’s will and grace will see me through all the trials that are to come my way. Aside from the fear of the unknown, I also count it as a brand new blessing. Not many people get this opportunity and even fewer get it by surprise. This is a blessed trip and I will not let it go to waste on my life or the lives of those around me.

Packing up and Moving Home Pt.2

I am packed, moved and settled back into the place I call home. On the south side of Chicago, in a small house is where I lay my head at night. It’s not the safest place but my family and I survive by the grace of God.

Speaking of God’s grace, I was thinking a few days ago about how much my spiritual life has grown by being at Olivet and how much I relapse into bad habits once I return home. How can it be that God can give me such a lovely place to shelter my fears and allow my spirit to grow and then send me back to a place where it is all but forgotten? Call it a test of strength or resilience; I can’t say I know exactly why my life is like this faith-based roller coaster. I go away and I feel stronger in my faith than when I am in my own home. Perhaps this is why I have such a big heart for Missions, even though there are places I can go to and people I can save right here in Chicago.

Just from speaking with my friends and hearing stories from my professors, I know that going to strange, unknown places is both exciting and terrifying. I recall telling a friend of mine that I wanted to go to Las Vegas for a vacation, or even for a missions trip and he swore up and down that he would never go to Vegas. To him, it’s such a “sinful” place and it’s a city built on “tempting” people to do the wrong things in life; gambling, strip shows, and excessive drinking are just the mainstream things he could think of. I can agree with him on what he said, however I am pretty sure that if Jesus were alive and walking in our physical world today, He would go to a city like that. I am also sure that God would send us, His soldiers, to places like that. I have nothing against Las Vegas, nor do I want people to ever think that it is a horrible, wretched place to go to. It does offer more than any “regular” city in the market of “do what you want, when you want, however you want and no one can say anything about it”. After all, “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”. That being said, I would still love to go there for a vacation. There are many shows I want to see, places I want to eat at and I want to do the whole “tourist” thing.

When I was talking to my friend about his whole “not going there ever in my life” skit, I couldn’t help but ask him, “What if God sent you there?” Comically, he just continued, “Nope, I’m not going!” I don’t think he really took me seriously and quite frankly, I don’t think he wanted to take me seriously because that would imply the option that he would in fact, go to a place he despised. While thinking about that when I was at school, I was reminded about the story of Jonah in the Bible and was thinking about it just a few days ago again. He was told to go somewhere and ran away instead. As a result, in a nutshell, his life fell to shambles and ultimately, he went where God told him to go. I was thinking to myself, “Would I be another Jonah? Would I be the one who ran away from God? How many others are running away from God? How many others are running away from God, but won’t admit it? I don’t think my friend would be one to actually “run away”, but he is very stubborn in what he believes is proper for a “good Christian”. To me, a “good Christian” has God in their heart and uses their heart as a cell phone with unlimited minutes, perfect reception and excellent call quality to talk to God anytime, anywhere, about anything. That is all. He knows the matters of my heart and guides me according to His will. I will go where He tells me.

On the subject matter of travel, I will be leaving my home in Chicago and embarking on the journey of a lifetime. By the grace of God, by the will of God and with His protection I will be traveling to Florida to start my 7 month internship at Disney World. The more I think about it, the more excited I become. There is also a level of fear that brews inside of me as I wonder what exactly will become of this experience. Everyone I talk to about the internship tell me the same thing, “It’s going to be an excellent experience for you!” Aside from the job and class aspect of the experience, I know this will be a learning experience of a different type. I will have to basically learn how to live on my own in an apartment setting and learn my surroundings from scratch. I won’t have anyone with “first time living alone” experience to guide me by the hand or offer me advice. Any advice I do receive will be from family in Chicago, so that won’t be too helpful while I’m in Florida! I will have to figure out where the good grocery stores are, find good stores in general, and learn how to do these things with a whole new transit system, all from scratch. It would be rather naïve to think that I wouldn’t have to learn these things, since I am going to be there for the better half of a year. It seems daunting and I admit that I am a bit fearful of the thought. Once again, I take solace in that where ever God takes me, He will guide me through my everyday adventures as well.

I know the basic dangers of traveling anywhere and I know that there are unexpected dangers that lurk around every corner. However, with a strong faith I cultivated and a resolute mind to obey the Lord, I know that where ever He sends me, He goes with me. Even with the everyday mundane things that occur, I must remember that He will never forget about me.

Packing up and Moving Home; Pt. 1

Yesterday was the first installment of me moving things from campus back to my home. With the help of my friend and her pickup truck, many things were moved home safely and nothing was damaged. The last installment of things will come home with me when I move back at the end of the semester. Until then, the few things that are currently on campus with me will help me survive the last of the days with my close friends and professors. I have both of my guitars, my laptop, clothing and of course my devotional and Bible are still with me. The essentials of life all in one room.

While I was sitting in my room, dwelling amongst the emptiness, I began to wonder how the rest of the year was going to look for me. In one month, I will be embarking on an adventure to a place I have not visited since I was a small child, working a job I never thought I would have, and living amongst people I do not know. For 7 whole months, no less. I know that God would not have presented this opportunity to me without reason and without a means to cope. Thankfully I will be traveling and adventuring this entire time with a dear friend of mine (he knows who he is!) and I know that God will be traveling with me wherever I may roam.

Aside from the whole "I am going away for longer than I have gone to a distant land" type of worry, I have a worry for my family as well. I will not be there for certain birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and other occasions which I normally would be there. I never took it into account last year that I would not be near my mom for her birthday the next year, this year. The same goes for some of the holidays I will not be around for. It never occurred to me last year that I would not be home to celebrate them with my family the next year. This can only lead me to the old adage: "What a difference a day makes". It's more like "What a difference a year makes". I can only start thinking of the future of my life now in a different perspective. What will happen to me in a year from today? Where will I be a year from today? What about 2 years? 3 years? I know and believe that God has big plans for my life, even if that does not mean doing "big" things. Touching the lives for the sake of God is all I want to do and if this is the adventure I must experience in order to learn how to do the things that God wants me to, then I shall adventure along and enjoy the ride. Whether it is a day, a year, or a lifetime, I know that wherever I go, roam, run, walk, skip, jump, fly or ship to, my Lord and Savior is with me.

Testing for Legitimacy

This is my first blog using Blogger, so I would like to get to know this site a bit better before I start seriously blogging about my soon to come adventures. I want to know the ins and outs of the website, therefore this is my test blog. I hope this site can handle everything I want to do and show from my upcoming adventures. Until then, I have to finish my semester in college. The internship is soon to start.
